Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pumpkin? Halloween Safety Guide for Guinea Pig Owners

The jack o lantern is carved, there’s a pile of orange pulp on the counter, and your guinea pig is wheeking like they know something good is happening. Pumpkin season is here, and it’s hard not to share.

So can guinea pigs eat pumpkin? Yes, in small amounts. A few bites of fresh, raw pumpkin flesh can be a fun seasonal treat. The seeds, the carved jack o lantern and anything sweet or spiced should stay off the menu.

This guide covers which parts of a pumpkin are safe, how much to offer, how to serve it, and the other Halloween hazards guinea pig owners should know about.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Pumpkin Safely?

They can. Pumpkin is a type of winter squash. Iowa State University Extension describes “pumpkin” as a general term for any winter squash with a hard rind that is typically ribbed and roughly round. VCA Animal Hospitals includes squash on its list of good vegetable choices for guinea pigs.

The key is which part you offer and how it’s prepared.

  • Fresh raw flesh: Safe in small pieces as an occasional extra.
  • Seeds: Avoid. VCA advises against feeding guinea pigs seeds, nuts, oats or dry cereals because they’re too high in carbohydrates and fat.
  • Canned pie filling and pumpkin treats: Avoid. These are sweetened and spiced, and the Merck Veterinary Manual says sugary treats should not be fed to guinea pigs.
  • Cooked or roasted pumpkin: Skip it if it has butter, oil, salt, sugar or spices.
  • A carved jack o lantern: Skip it. Once it has been cut open and left out, it starts to spoil.

Is Pumpkin Good for Guinea Pigs?

Pumpkin is fine as a bit of variety, but it isn’t a nutritional powerhouse for guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs can’t make their own vitamin C, so they need it from their diet every day. VCA explains that a lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy. Pumpkin is fairly low in it. In a vitamin C chart from Veterinary Partner, pumpkin has about 9.1 mg per 100 grams, compared with about 131.9 mg in parsley and 120 mg in kale.

That means pumpkin is a fun extra, not a vitamin C source. Keep vitamin C rich greens and a fresh, guinea pig specific pellet as the base of the diet. For a refresher on daily needs, see our tips for the care and maintenance of guinea pigs.

How Much Pumpkin Can a Guinea Pig Eat?

Think of pumpkin as a garnish, not a meal. Veterinary Partner suggests a total of about one quarter to one half cup of fresh foods a day, built mostly around foods that are rich in vitamin C. We suggest no more than a small cube or two of pumpkin inside that total, a couple of times a week.

How Do You Serve Pumpkin to a Guinea Pig?

A little prep keeps this treat safe.

Raw pumpkin cut open with seeds removed and small peeled cubes ready for a guinea pig
  • Pick a fresh pumpkin: Use a pie pumpkin or one you just cut, not one that has been on the porch.
  • Wash and peel it: Rinse the outside, then cut away the tough rind.
  • Scoop out the seeds and pulp: Set them aside for your own roasting plans.
  • Cut it small: Offer a cube or two of raw flesh, about the size of your fingertip.
  • Go slowly: Veterinary Partner suggests adding only one new fresh food every three to four days so the gut can adjust.
  • Clear leftovers: Remove any uneaten pumpkin later in the day so it doesn’t spoil in the cage.

Guinea pigs can be picky about new foods. VCA notes that they develop food preferences early in life and don’t easily adapt to changes, so don’t worry if yours just sniffs it.

What Are the Risks of Feeding Pumpkin to Guinea Pigs?

Most problems come from too much, or from the wrong kind.

  • Tummy trouble: Any sudden change in diet can upset a guinea pig’s sensitive gut. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises making all diet changes gradually.
  • Seeds and starchy treats: Veterinary Partner warns that high starch foods such as nuts, cakes, cookies, cereal and bread can seriously unbalance the normal gut bacteria.
  • Crowding out better foods: Filling up on pumpkin leaves less room for hay, the most important part of a guinea pig’s diet according to VCA.

What Other Halloween Hazards Should Guinea Pig Owners Know About?

Pumpkin isn’t the only seasonal risk. The Bird & Exotic Hospital in Greenacres, Florida, shares several Halloween tips for small pets.

  • Candy and chocolate: The hospital warns that even small bits of chocolate or processed foods can be toxic to certain exotic species. Keep candy bowls well away from the cage.
  • Scented candles, incense and fog machines: Small mammals have sensitive respiratory systems, so avoid these near enclosures.
  • Fake webs, tinsel and plastic bones: These can cause digestive blockages or injuries if chewed or swallowed.
  • Lit jack o lanterns and cords: The ASPCA notes that pets can knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire, and advises keeping wires out of reach.
  • Noise and visitors: Doorbells and trick or treaters can be stressful. Move the cage to a quiet, separate room and play gentle background music.

Guinea pigs are prey animals that startle easily, which our interesting guinea pig facts explain in more detail. Bird owners can find similar advice in our Halloween safety tips for birds.

Should Your Guinea Pig Wear a Halloween Costume?

It’s best to skip it. The Bird & Exotic Hospital says exotic animals generally don’t tolerate costumes well, and outfits can restrict movement, trap heat or interfere with fur.
