While the American Kennel Club and the Canadian Kennel Club classify the Shiba Inu as a non-working breed, both the British Kennel Club and the Australian National Kennel Club classify this breed in their utility groups. The United Kennel Club classifies them as a Northern Breed and the FCI classifies them in the Asian Spitz and related breeds group.
