10 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Agoutis

While the breadth of earthly biodiversity may be well known, the incredible things our animal counterparts can do are often hidden to humans. There are a lot of myths and some misinformation about Mexican and Central American Agoutis. Here are some interesting facts that just may surprise you.

Agoutis are known as jungle gardeners. This is because they bury nuts and seeds and then forget all about them…allowing them to grow.

Agouti is the only animal capable of opening a brazil nut. Without a nutcracker!

Agoutis are born with fur and their eyes fully open.

They are monogamous, meaning they stay with the same partner for life.

They can do noise, it’s a cute little barking sound. They do this when scared.

They grow up to 50cm (20 inches) in length and can weigh between 2-3 kg.

They are naturally very shy creatures in the wild and will run and hide at the slightest hint of danger.
