We all know that dogs eat just about anything and if they could choose what to eat, their diet would be mainly meat and other treats they adore.
However, this doesn’t mean that you should feed them whatever food you or they want.
There are certain foods that can make your dog sick or even cause death in some cases and it’s best not to give these things to your pet!
While it can be tempting, it is best to feed your dog a balanced diet and stay clear of the foods that are harmful to them.
Foods That Aren’t Safe For Dogs
As a pet parent or someone who is frequently around pets, specifically dogs, you should make sure that the dog in question doesn’t have any food allergies before feeding them anything.
Outside of that, you also need to be aware of things that can harm or even kill a dog. For example, sunflower seeds.
This is one food item that has dog parents calling the vet. But while you think they are harmful to your dog, they actually aren’t.
By allowing dogs to eat sunflower seeds, their owners are providing them with plenty of nutrients. This should be fed in moderation, of course. This is just one example of a type of food that you may not be sure whether you can give your dog or not.
Here are some foods you absolutely shouldn’t allow your pup to eat.
Raw eggs
Raw eggs are a food item that you should also never feed to your pup.
The egg whites can cause the formation of life-threatening infections, while the raw yolk is known for causing stomach problems and an upset tummy.
Alcohol
Alcohol is one type of food you should never be given to your dog. Why? Because it contains toxic substances, which can lead to vomiting and other serious problems for your pet.
Bread
Bread is a food that dogs should never be given. Why? Because it contains gluten, which can lead to stomach problems and an upset tummy for your pup.
If you have a dog with celiac disease or other gastrointestinal issues, then one slice of bread can do them in!
Xylitol
Xylitol is something that you should never give to your dog. Why? Because it can cause a life-threatening drop in blood sugar levels, which leads to seizures and other brain dysfunction.
Macadamia nuts
Macadamia nuts are one type of nut that you should be careful about giving your dog because of the risk of a life-threatening illness.
Grapes
Grapes are another food that is harmful to dogs. The toxicity of grapes in pets can lead to kidney failure and allergic reactions, which could end up being fatal in some cases.
Onions
Onions are one more type of food you should never give your dog a chance at eating because it will cause them to have an upset stomach, which can lead to vomiting and diarrhea.
Potatoes
Potatoes are yet another food you should never give your dog because they contain a poisonous substance called solanine.
This is what makes it so dangerous for dogs that eat potatoes.
We all know the dangers of eating raw or undercooked meat, but this is something that is just as bad for them.
Moldy Food
The mold on stale bread or other rotting foods can make your dog very sick if they ingest it. The mold on old food can cause your dog severe gestational harm.
Your pup may suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, and food poisoning. If you find yourself looking to feed your pup something and it’s moldy, throw it out.
Figs
These are another type of food that is bad for your dog to eat as they can cause hemolytic anemia in dogs if consumed in large quantities.
If you have figs around the house and want to make sure your dogs stay away from them, make sure you are storing the figs in a way that they can’t lick or reach.
Chocolate
Chocolate is another food that you should never feed your dog. It’s toxic to their system and can lead to seizures, coma, or even death, depending on how much they ingest at one time.
You should be very careful about this around your dog. Some pet owners choose not to have any form of chocolate in the home or in space their dogs can get to or have access to.
Fatty Foods
Some foods that have high-fat content are not good for pups to eat.
If you’re feeding your dog something with high levels of fat and meat together, then this means it’s time to take a break as it is slowing down your dog’s digestion.
This can lead to more severe issues later on.
Just like humans, dogs need a balance of healthy fats, fibers, and other nutrients.
This is not an exhaustive list of all the foods that dogs should stay away from, but it does cover some good examples to get you started!
While making sure your dog doesn’t have any food allergies and feeding them with balance in mind are essential parts of their diet, there are also certain things they shouldn’t be eating.
