We always hear the saying that a “cat has 9 lives”. So we’ve created this list of the interesting cat facts that may blow your mind! This doesn’t apply to all cats though. There are cases where they seem normal. Check these 15 amazing cat facts that make them special (or not) right meow!

15 Interesting Cat Facts that you need to know

1. Cats lack a sweet tooth.

Cats are believed to be the only mammals who don’t taste sweetness. Life is indeed a little less sweet for cats. This is because a study of genes shows that they lack functioning taste receptors for sugar. Don’t mean you can’t give them a candy inspired cat name.

2. Cats can jump as high as six times their length

While a cat is growing up, their back leg muscles develop over time and become powerful. Well, that’s if they love to play around and don’t lay around lazily.

3. Cats are like umbrellas

How is that possible? Cats formed into the shape of an umbrella whenever they fall – they tuck themselves into an umbrella shape, which enables them to land safely using their feet. It’s called ‘cat righting reflex’. Cool, right?

4. Cats are most active at dawn and dusk

Cats are crepuscular animals, meaning that they tend to sleep at midday and night when the sun is at its peak. They also reserve their energy when the weather is at its hottest! Cats also sleep between 12 to 20 hours per day. No wonder they have a lot of energy when it’s play time.

5. Cats walk like camels and giraffes!

This is something known as digitigrade posture. Their toes and feet are designed to move their right feet first, then move both of their left feet. No other animals walk this way at all.

6. Cats also have the “spidey-sense”

Cats use their whiskers to “feel” the environment around them in an effort to determine which small spaces they can fit in. They also use it to check for threats. This is why we should never, EVER, cut their whiskers.

7. A group of cats is called a  ‘Clowder’

Not a clam chowder, but a ‘Clowder’. It can also be called a glaring, particularly if the cats are uncertain of each other. A litter of kittens can also be called a kindle.

8. A cat has no collarbone!

As flexible as they may seem, they can also fit through any opening smaller than its head.

9. Cats also have whiskers on the backs of their front legs

Yup, you read that right. They have the ability to provide information about the position of their prey while they hunt.

10. Cats hate to make eye contact

Most cats won’t make eye contact with you, but if they do, it is just by accident. They then blink and narrow their eyes in an evil way like their sucking your soul.  For this reason some people like evil cat names.

11. Cats can tolerate temperatures up to 133℉

With enough water, cats can feel comfortable even during the hot summer weather. They don’t sweat at all!

12. Female cats can get pregnant at just 4 months old!

Yikes! Might as well have your feline friend stay indoors if you wouldn’t like her to carry kittens in her belly at such an early age.

13. Cats are manipulative

Cats are also like babies to be honest. An interesting fact that you might not know is that cats also have a “cry” which they use to manipulate humans which is similar to a cry of a baby or a small childs.

14. Cats’ rough tongues can lick a bone clean

That is one strong tongue! A cat’s incisors can shred any meat into chunks and use its papillae to clean off meat on any bone.

15. Cats can predict the future!

Not only do they have the ‘spidey-sense’ through their whiskers, bats are highly sensitive to vibrations and may be able to detect earthquake tremors 10 or 15 minutes before humans can.

So what do you think of these cool cat facts? As interesting as they are, cats are indeed adorable pets and have their own unique traits. Comment down on anything interesting that your cat does.
